Results of Catalin Radio Restorations
After we received the shipment of this Catalin Radio from a customer, it was in good condition but had no display quality left. It was a prime candidate for a complete cosmetic restoration. There was caked on dark patina and the original grille bars were discolored, and one of them had partially melted on one side.
The restoration process was a “Cut, Buff and Polish” that involved 16-17 individual steps. Each step contributes to the final result as shown in the pictures below.
The knobs on this radio are reproductions and the grille bars looked worse for the wear. I repaired the one melted grille bar and to re-invigorate the color by airbrushing a translucent color to have a matched set.
The green swirl cabinet is an uncommon with light green swirl. Most of the EP375 Green Swirl are a dark green tone, so this makes this radio rather unique in its presentation.
The restoration is a multi-stage process from Wet/Sanding to the application of finish waxes. This high-gloss finish is embedded in Catalin material itself. There was not clear glossy top-coat used. It was done the "Old School" way.
