Many of the Catalin Radios manufactures came with asbestos heat shields straight from the factory. When the health effects of asbestos became public, these heat shields were removed from the interior of the cabinets but were not replaced with a suitable alternative. 

If you play you Catalin radio(s) and do not have a proper heat shield in place, you will end up discoloring the Catalin or cause tube burns.
